Hilton Head Island Fishing

Hilton Head Island Fishing

Anyone who enjoys sport fishing is going to truly enjoy Hilton Head Island fishing. The island offers a chance to go fishing either inland, on shore (3 miles off beach) or offshore (beyond 3 miles off shore) for a variety of game fish such as Spanish mackerel, redfish, cobia and speckled trout.

But the fishing that really excites sports men and women looking for something different is shark fishing. The types of sharks commonly caught include the Hammerhead, Bull, Lemon Sharks, Bonnet Head Sharks and Tiger sharks. Chartered fishing excursions can take a group of people offshore where they can experience the thrill of catching a thrashing shark.

Other types of Hilton Head Island fishing include:

  • Fly fishing
  • Inland fishing
  • Shore fishing
  • Deep Sea fishing

Deep sea fishing charters take sports men and women up to 70 miles offshore where they can catch deep sea trout, Tarpon, Spanish mackerel, and sharks.

But if you prefer not to venture out that far, there's plenty of fishing a lot closer to shore or on the island itself . . .

  • Fresh or brackish water lagoons
  • Tidal lagoons
  • Tidal creeks
  • Caliboque Sound
  • Atlantic Ocean

Come Fly with Me

Not everyone enjoys trolling or still fishing on the Atlantic Ocean. Some prefer to enjoy nature while testing fly fishing skills. Fly fishing in Hilton Head is very popular. You can fish for red drum, ladyfish, jacks, or bluefish (to name a few) in the island low country.

But this isn't always your typical small fish fly fishing. Anglers catch redfish weighing as much as 20 pounds and Cobia weighting 30 pounds in the mudflats.

Clamming it Up

Of course, there's more than one way to catch seafood. If you aren't interested in trying your hand at fly fishing, troll fishing or shark baiting, there's always clam digging, crab catching or shrimping.

Many people consider Hilton Head Island to be a fishing paradise. Charter excursions can be arranged at resorts or marinas. You're provided everything you need except for food and drink. The boats are well-equipped, licensed and operated by experienced seamen with proven fishing skills.

By the way, when you go on your Atlantic Ocean fishing trip, be sure to keep your eyes open for dolphins. They're frequently spotted and will put on quite a show for your enjoyment.

Great weather . . . plenty of fish . . . experienced fishing guide . . . beautiful island . . . what more could a sports person ask for?
